Detailed Information

Northern Ireland credit crunch map from the Radio 4 iPM programme's listener survey. This map is from the data entered up to 9am on 29th May 2008.

The Northern Ireland data is handled separately from the England, Scotland and Wales data as Northern Ireland is on a different grid system to the rest of the British Isles. Ireland is covered by the Irish National Grid system and OSi (Ordnance Survey Ireland), while England, Scotland and Wales are covered by OSGB36 and Ordnance Survey.

Due to the fact that we couldn't get postcode outlines for Northern Ireland, the borders have been built by using the postcode unit points and aggregating up to form postcode district borders using Thiessen polygons. The resulting data set was then clipped to the Northern Ireland boundary outline.

This method of building postcode district outlines from the unit postcode points means that the dataset doesn't follow the true postcode borders, but forms a good approximation. Differences can be seen where the true border follows a natural division, for example where there is a road or a river. This often forms the boundary between different postcodes, while by aggregating up and using Thiessen polygons, these natural breaks are lost and the divisions form around the base data points.
